About Me
Party Activities
I have been an active member of the Labour Party for over twenty years holding office at branch, CLP and regional level. I’ve been an elected constituency representative on the National Executive Committee for ten years, and also ex-officio on the National Policy Forum. I’m supported by the Centre Left Grass Roots Alliance. I was Parliamentary candidate for Meriden in the West Midlands at the 2001 General Election.
Trade Union Activities
As an Early Years teacher working for an agency in London, I’m a member of the NUT. For many years I was a NALGO member when I was a children’s librarian in Newham and the ILEA, and was secretary of the shop stewards' committee.
Public Office Info
I was a councillor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for thirteen years. I was Leader of the Labour Group for two years in opposition. On taking power, I chaired the Planning and Environmental Services Committee for two years, and was Vice Chair of Finance. I was a school governor when my children were at Primary School.
Campaign Activities
I have been working for socialism ever since I joined the Labour Party. On the NEC and the NPF I regularly raise issues such as using our huge financial stakes in banks to control their policies, rail re-nationalisation, ending the war in Afghanistan, the fourth option for council housing, and Party democracy. I want to see a mass campaigning Party returning to core socialist values, working for peace though the United Nations.
Other Activities
I am a member of the Co-op Party and chaired the London Political Committee under CRS. I am secretary of Labour Against the War and vice-chair of the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy. I am a member of the LRC, CND and Friends of the Earth. I support WWF and have family membership of the Natural History Museum.
